From the 1690's on, times were more prosperous and families could afford larger homes. Ceilings were heightened and windows enlarged. The need for more light and space in attics resulted in dormers. Farmhouses were built for need rather than design. They were simply designed, often featuring functional porches that wrapped around either side or to the rear.
