1885 Wealthy Americans built sprawling getaway houses on the coast to escape the cities. With it's roots influenced by English and New England Colonial architecture, the Shingle style is purely American. It is identified by gambrel roofs, bays, horizontal flow, shingles, and stone exteriors.
